UN Resolutions Glossary

A reference glossary of United Nations resolutions relevant to the dispute, including General Assembly Resolution 2065 (XX), the subsequent resolutions adopted between 1965 and 1988, and the ongoing role of the Special Committee on Decolonization (C24).

UNGA Resolution 2065 (XX)

1965

Recognized that a sovereignty dispute exists between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the islands and invited both governments to proceed without delay with bilateral negotiations to find a peaceful solution, bearing in mind the interests of the population and the principles of the 1960 Declaration on decolonization (Resolution 1514 (XV)). This is the foundational resolution establishing the UN's treatment of the dispute as a bilateral sovereignty question.

UNGA Resolution 3160 (XXVIII)

1973

Reaffirmed the existence of the sovereignty dispute and urged Argentina and the United Kingdom to proceed without delay with the negotiations called for in Resolution 2065 (XX), so as to put an end to the colonial situation, and to report on progress by the twenty-ninth session. It referred to the islands' inhabitants as a "population" rather than a "people," reflecting the Assembly's position that self-determination did not straightforwardly apply.
